Boston, MA (January 19, 2024) – Hemenway & Barnes LLP is pleased to announce the election of Mark B. Elefante as Managing Partner to succeed Nancy B. Gardiner, who held the position from 2020 – 2024.

Elefante joined the firm in 1999 and was elected into the partnership in 2006. He served as Chair of the firm’s Business Law and Real Estate Group and has been a member of the firm’s Management Committee for the past six years. While serving as Managing Partner, Mark will maintain his fiduciary and real estate practices.

“Hemenway & Barnes has given so much to me personally and professionally. It is an honor to lead a firm with such a long history of service to its clients and community and to follow in the footsteps of our prior Managing Partners, including, my father, Michael B. Elefante, who served as the firm’s Managing Partner from 1993 to 1999,” said Elefante. “Nancy Gardiner led the firm through eventful times, reinforcing our collaborative culture and our commitment to client service. I look forward to building on these strengths and values.”

“On behalf of the entire firm, we are thrilled to have Mark as Hemenway & Barnes’ Managing Partner. He is a trusted advisor who has developed long-term relationships with his clients and is a dedicated partner who has earned the respect of his colleagues. He exemplifies our vision for the future,” said Gardiner. "It has been a privilege to serve as Managing Partner and to lead a firm with such a rich history in Boston’s legal, financial and nonprofit communities. I am grateful for the extraordinary contributions our attorneys and staff have made." Gardiner remains a partner at Hemenway & Barnes, and she will continue advising multigenerational families on wealth management, tax, and legacy planning strategies.

A graduate of Williams College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Elefante began his legal career at an AmLaw 100 law firm before joining Hemenway & Barnes.
