January 22, 2020

Boston, MA (January 17, 2020) - Hemenway & Barnes LLP is pleased to announce the appointment of Nancy B. Gardiner as Hemenway & Barnes Managing Partner to succeed Kurt F. Somerville, who held the position from 2013 – 2019.

Nancy joined the firm in 1986 and, after a short hiatus from 1993-1998, she was elected into the partnership in 2005. She is the Director of the firm’s Family Office and Philanthropic Advisory Services and is the past Co-Chair of the Nonprofit Practice Group. In addition, Nancy is a Managing Director and Secretary of Hemenway Trust Company, a New Hampshire-based private fiduciary firm and affiliate of Hemenway & Barnes. While serving as Managing Partner, Nancy will maintain her active fiduciary practice and continue to serve clients in Hemenway & Barnes’ Private Client and Nonprofit Groups.

“Seamless transitions have always been the hallmark of the commitment we make to our clients – to be there when our clients need us. Kurt Somerville has led the firm during a time of unprecedented growth in our work for high net worth families, closely-held businesses and nonprofit organizations. I am honored to continue his legacy and the legacies of other Managing Partners before me, building on the strengths and values of the firm. I welcome the opportunity to work more closely with the next generation of colleagues and clients and the chance to lead Hemenway & Barnes into the new decade.”

On behalf of the entire firm, Kurt noted, “We are thrilled to have Nancy as Hemenway & Barnes’ Managing Partner. She is a dedicated colleague, a compassionate and trusted advisor and a valued member of the community. An experienced leader, Nancy will champion the firm’s collegial culture and principles of professional service.” Kurt remains a partner at Hemenway & Barnes, and a Managing Director of Hemenway Trust Company.

Active in the community, Nancy is a Board Member of TSNE Missionworks and on the Board of Governors of the Colby College Museum of Art. She is past Trustee and Board President of the Winsor School and former President of the Board at Philanthropy Massachusetts. Nancy received her JD from University of Virginia School of Law, where she was an editor of the Virginia Tax Review, and her AB from Harvard University, where she graduated magna cum laude.
