SELECT CLIENT SERVICES
Hemenway & Barnes offers family office services, philanthropic
advisory services, and personal client services as a complement to our
fiduciary and legal services. To better serve our clients, we have
organized these services under the umbrella of Select Client Services.
Integrating these functions allows us to carry out our role as counselors
and advisors who respond to the full range of clients' needs and interests.
For the family of substantial means, a family office provides an effective
way to coordinate the stewardship of family assets and to organize
philanthropic and personal interests. The family office allows pursuit of
strategies that take into account the needs of individuals, as well as the
family group as a whole. The attorneys, trustees
and select client services staff at Hemenway & Barnes work with families to assess the
many factors involved in making the very personal decision to open a
family office, including: size of the asset base, family size, geographical
distribution of family members and family dynamics.
We offer a full range of legal, financial, investment management, estate
planning, trust and tax planning services. The family office often plays a
critical role in defining and preserving a sense of family and of common
values by various means, including family philanthropy, education and
family meetings. The range of family office services provided depends
upon the wishes and needs of our clients.
Hemenway & Barnes offers a wide range of philanthropic advisory
services to individuals, foundations and family groups as part of a
broader family office strategy or as a stand-alone service. The
lawyers,
trustees and philanthropic advisors at Hemenway & Barnes are
available to help clients identify goals, define their mission and develop
philanthropic strategies to achieve those goals. We advise clients on the
range of giving options and counsel them on structuring gifts, forming
charitable entities and evaluating the income, gift and estate tax
considerations involved under various circumstances.
We can tailor our work to accommodate a range of philanthropic budgets
and donor involvement. Our staff can provide consulting, assistance with
planning and program development, and administrative support. In
addition, we also facilitate meetings, plan site visits, perform due
diligence on grantees and potential grantees, and, when appropriate,
assess needs and available resources in a particular area of interest.
Lawyers and philanthropic advisors at Hemenway & Barnes work
with families to plan for family succession and the involvement of the
next generation of family members in philanthropy. In addition to
consulting and advice regarding grantmaking, we offer counsel to
trustees to help them fulfill their role and address leadership and
governance issues in the context of family foundations.
Hemenway & Barnes offers clients a range of personal services to
complement our estate planning and fiduciary services. From time to
time we assist clients with personal financial management ranging from
bill paying to budgeting decisions. Mindful of the fact that estate
planning involves making arrangements for lifetime decisions as well as
post mortem planning, our lawyers,
trustees and staff work with clients
as they age to arrange appropriate services and safeguards. Our staff is
prepared to work with children as well as elderly parents as the need for
planning and oversight evolves. Our staff also works with lawyers and
estate administrators during the estate administration process, and can
help families arrange for sale or other disposition of tangible property,
real estate and other assets. As with all our client services, we can tailor
the services provided to the clients' needs and budget.
