NONPROFIT REPRESENTATION
Hemenway & Barnes represents a diverse group of tax-exempt institutions and is one
of the few Boston firms with a nonprofit group dedicated to providing comprehensive
representation for such clients. The nonprofit group at Hemenway & Barnes provides a
broad range of legal services to over 40 nonprofit educational, public service,
cultural, conservation, religious and health care organizations. Our nonprofit
clients range in size and complexity from universities and hospitals to smaller
cultural organizations.
Hemenway & Barnes is one of Boston's oldest law firms, tracing
its history to 1863. We have a broad perspective on the issues faced by nonprofit
organizations. Lawyers at Hemenway & Barnes serve as directors or trustees of a
large number of charities, including The Boston Foundation, Children's Hospital, the
Conservation Law Foundation, WGBH, the New England Conservatory of Music, the Boston
Symphony Orchestra, the Longy School of Music and Big Sister Association of Greater
Boston, along with several of the charities for which we also serve as counsel. As
a result of our collective board service, we have a true sensitivity to the problems
which charitable organizations face on a day-to-day basis.
Members of our nonprofit group have written and spoken extensively on topics such
as the role and duties of directors, corporate governance, tax matters and planned
giving. We are members of the Attorney General's Advisory Committee on Public
Charities and that office's special task force on corporate governance. We are
therefore able to bring to our clients both recognized expertise and access to
decision-makers and regulators. The lawyers in the nonprofit group at Hemenway &
Barnes come from each of our separate practice areas; corporate, tax, probate and
estate planning, employment and litigation. Outlined here are the areas in which
Hemenway & Barnes provides services for its tax-exempt clients.
