Thank you for your interest in the Florence Evans Bushee Foundation, Inc. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please read the following eligibility guidelines carefully.
About Florence Evans Bushee
Florence Evans Bushee was born in December 1881 in Everett, Massachusetts, the daughter of Florence Fowler and Wilmot Roby Evans. The family moved to Boston, where her father was president of the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank for many years. In 1907, her father purchased the Newman Farm near Old Town Hill in Newbury. After his death in 1925, the farm was left to his daughter where she made her home for the next fifty years. Mrs. Bushee was beloved by all who knew her – an accomplished horsewoman, a discerning collector and antiquarian, a kind friend to hundreds of individuals, and a generous benefactor.
During her lifetime Mrs. Bushee provided financial assistance to many young people for their college education. Thanks to her foresight, the private foundation which she originally named for her father and which was renamed in her honor in 1986 by trustees continues each year to assist students from Newbury and neighboring communities who are seeking a college education.
Scholarship funds are made available annually to Newburyport High School, Triton Regional High School and Pentucket Regional High School. Recipients are selected among the senior class by a scholarship committee at each school. All other recipients are reviewed and selected by the Foundation directors.
The Bushee Foundation limits its scholarship awards to students who, at the time of the application, are residents of Newbury (including Byfield), Newburyport, West Newbury or Rowley, Massachusetts. High school seniors at Newburyport High School, Triton Regional High School, or Pentucket High School should apply at their respective Guidance Offices; all other applicants should apply directly to the Bushee Foundation (address below). In order to be eligible for scholarship consideration, students must first apply within five years of their high school graduation.
The Bushee Foundation provides up to four years of aid for students enrolled in a full-time undergraduate degree program. Recipients who successfully complete their freshman year are encouraged to apply directly to the Foundation for continued financial aid in subsequent years of an undergraduate degree program.
Applicants will be invited to a personal interview with the Bushee Foundation trustees during May or June between their freshman and sophomore years in college. Applicants are required to have an interview with the trustees prior to their senior year in college in order to be eligible for a scholarship in their senior year.
The amount of an award is based on demonstrated financial need with an addition for grade point averages over 3.5.
