Travis Roy Foundation
In 1995 Travis Roy was paralyzed in his first collegiate hockey game for Boston University. New England and the hockey community throughout the country spontaneously rallied to his and his family's support. In 1997, as a quadriplegic, Travis founded a publicly supported charity to help others, in recognition of the help he had received. Since 1997 Travis and his foundation have raised over $4,000,000 to help others with spinal cord injuries move forward with their lives through the purchase of adaptive equipment and aids and to support research into a cure.
When foundation trustee Arthur Page moved his practice to Hemenway & Barnes in 2008, the firm welcomed as well the Travis Roy Foundation as a pro bono client. The firm provides both legal and administrative support to the Foundation. The firm's legal staff provides their expertise in legal issues, IRS tax compliance, event and fundraising ethics and guidelines and nonprofit governance. Hemenway & Barnes's philanthropic advisory services staff assists the Foundation in its fundraising initiatives and processes funding requests from individuals impacted by spinal cord injuries and for research in the field; provides oversight of the Foundation's contracts with outside marketing and event planning consultants; and assists with strategic planning and implementation of the Foundation's mission. Hemenway & Barnes's trust department custodies the Foundation's funds and oversees investments and disbursements. The firm also sponsors a team at the Foundation's annual wiffle ball benefit at Little Fenway in Essex, Vermont every August.
