LAWRENCE T. PERERA

LAWRENCE T. PERERA left the bench to became a partner at Hemenway & Barnes in 1979. Mr. Perera has been active in the field of trust and estate law since commencing practice in 1962. In addition to serving as an executor and trustee and as counsel to fiduciaries, Mr. Perera's practice also includes such related areas as the resolution of disputes involving the construction and administration of wills and trusts, will contests, and guardianship and domestic relations cases. In the past, Mr. Perera has served as an independent director of the Scudder, Stevens and Clark Common Stock and Balanced Funds. He currently serves as a trustee of Massachusetts Investors Trust and various other investment companies managed by Massachusetts Financial Services Company of Boston.

Mr. Perera is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and a life member of the American Law Institute. Mr. Perera was a faculty member and Trustee of the National Judicial College. He served as President of Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. from 1987 to 1989. Mr. Perera has served as a mediator and special master for the Trial Court of the Commonwealth.

In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Perera has chaired the Finance Commission of the City of Boston and the Back Bay Architectural Commission. He has been a managing director of the Metropolitan Opera Association, a trustee of the Wang Center, a trustee of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and a director and vice-chairman of The Boston Foundation. Currently, Mr. Perera serves as a trustee (emeritus) of the Boston Athenaeum, a trustee (emeritus) of WGBH Educational Foundation, chairman of the Overseers of the Boston Opera Association and Member of the Board of Overseers of the Boston Lyric Opera.

He graduated from Harvard College in 1957 and Harvard Law School in 1961. After clerking for Associate Justice R. Ammi Cutter of the Supreme Judicial Court, Mr. Perera joined the firm of Palmer & Dodge, where he practiced until he was appointed a judge of the Middlesex County Probate Court in 1974.
